Chapter 9
Monday arrived with a cold snap that left frost tingeing the fallen leaves and dried grass in the meadows surrounding the house. Paulette checked on the jack-o-lantern, afraid the freeze would ruin it before the party. It only needed to last another five days. Standing on the front porch, a heavy robe tucked snugly around her, she quietly sang the Eagles version of “Witchy Woman” as she inspected each item of the fall décor. So far they’d held together without any breakage or deterioration. She shivered despite her warm robe and hurried back inside, shutting the ancient wooden door with a hearty thump as she ended the song.
Meredith sauntered down the stairs from the second floor, dressed in maroon jeans and a cream sweater, short black boots tapping on each wood step. Paulette wished she could wear a comfy outfit like hers, but until she delivered the babe and then regained her figure, she’d have to wait.
“Ready to go browse the antique stores and boutiques?” Meredith reached the foyer and paused to assess Paulette’s attire. “Or aren’t you feeling up to it today?”
She started up the stairs. “I’ll be with you in a moment. I need to put on some clothes and we can go.”
Within ten minutes, Paulette hurried into the kitchen dressed and ready to leave. She’d selected her favorite stretchy forest green slacks with an oversized, button-down, lemon yellow man’s shirt. She’d paired it with comfy black loafers, though she would have preferred her pumps. But with all the walking they’d be doing, comfort was more important than aesthetics.
Meredith sat at the little table, a mug in one hand as she perused a newspaper lying on the surface. Paulette crossed to the cupboard to retrieve a mug.
“I appreciate you helping me by drinking decaf.” Paulette lifted the carafe and watched the steam rise as she poured.
“Not a problem. I’m glad you’re finally willing to do this shopping spree. You’ve made me nervous waiting so long to make preparations.” Meredith set her mug down and folded the paper.
“I’d always said I’d wait until one month prior to the due date, but…” She sipped then lowered her mug. “Somehow I feel we should do this sooner than later.”
The time was fast approaching when she’d need baby furniture and clothes. She’d put it off as long as possible, not willing to jinx the pregnancy by preparing for the little one too soon. The babe moved frequently in her distended belly, assuaging any worry about a stillbirth. So many missteps could occur up until the baby emerged into the world. She insisted on doing everything she could to safeguard the life within, trusting and depending on her.
Her doctor had increased the frequency of her appointments due to the high risks associated with childbirth at her age. Everything was progressing normally, a fact she reminded herself daily. Her only complaint was a tendency to lightheadedness, apparently due to dilated veins according to her doctor. She simply had to remember to stand slowly to prevent the dizziness.
